A Hundred Years + Still Handing Out Seeds
Some places are not finished yet. That is exactly the point.
The Library Diaries — Week 04 | Brownsburg Public Library, Brownsburg, Indiana
My friend Taylor and I started this one the right way, with coffee. We met at Best Friends Coffee & Bagels on Main Street before we ever pulled into the library parking lot, and if you have never been, it is exactly what the name promises. Bob and Chico built the place on the idea that good food brings people together, and you feel it the second you walk in. Three separate rooms, a menu of cold brew flights that rotates every month, and the kind of easy hospitality that makes you want to linger longer than you planned. We did not linger long enough. It was already warming up outside and we had a library to get to.
A Library That Has Been Rebuilt More Than Once
Brownsburg Public Library has been serving this community since 1918. It started as a Carnegie library, moved into its current building on South Jefferson Street in 1981, and has been renovated twice since, once in 1999 and again in 2019. That is a building that has been reshaped by its own community more than once and kept showing up anyway. There is something steadying about a place that has been rebuilt and still feels this settled into itself.
Taylor's kids are younger than mine, so this trip was built around the children's area from the start. We found a corner, got situated, and let the kids lead. It was a genuinely warm day outside, and the biggest win of the whole visit might have just been the air conditioning. We read some books, let the littles explore, and mostly just sat in the cool air and let the morning slow down.
Favorite Spot Inside: The Seed Library
This is the detail that stuck with me the most. Tucked into the library is an actual seed library, a card catalog cabinet with drawers labeled Vegetables A-C, Vegetables D-M, Flowers Annuals A-L, Flowers Perennials A-H, and on down the line. You can borrow seeds the same way you would borrow a book, take them home, grow something, and bring seeds back at the end of the season if you want to keep the cycle going. For someone who thinks about homestead living every single summer, finding a seed library tucked inside a public library felt like a small, unexpected gift. It is such a quiet, useful idea, and it says a lot about a library that is thinking past its own walls.
The kids area held its own too. There was a magnet tube wall built into the wall itself that kept little hands busy far longer than I expected, a tree stump stool tucked in front of a wall of mirrors and glittery sea creature cutouts, and a wooden activity cube with xylophone keys and spinning gears that our littlest visitor could not leave alone. Simple, tactile, built for small hands to explore without needing a screen. That is always a win in my book.

This one is a bit of a departure from what I usually reach for, but as someone running a business that lives and dies by systems, I picked it up on purpose. It's McKinsey Digital's own playbook for how organizations actually pull off digital transformation, not just the strategy slide version, but the real mechanics behind rebuilding how teams work, adopt technology, and scale what works. As I keep building out better systems for my own clients this summer, it felt like the right kind of read for where my brain has been lately.
The line that stuck with me most:
"It's the capabilities of the organization that win the race."
That is the whole book in one sentence, and honestly, it is the whole point of a lot of what I am building for clients right now too.

If you make a morning of this one, start at Best Friends Coffee & Bagels on East Main Street for breakfast or a cold brew flight, then head over to the library once you have had your coffee. The two are close enough together to make a very easy loop, and Brownsburg's Main Street corridor has enough small, locally owned spots nearby to stretch the visit into a full morning if you want to.
Two Friends, Three Kids, + One Very Warm Tuesday
Here is the honest version of this one. It was hot, we were tired, and the biggest highlight for the adults in the room was probably the air conditioning. Taylor's kids explored the magnet wall and the gear cube while we read board books and let the morning move at toddler speed instead of our usual pace. Brownsburg did not knock our socks off the way some of the other stops have, and I want to be honest about that here, because that is the point of doing this every week instead of just once. Not every library is going to be the favorite on the first visit. This one still gave us seeds to plant, cool air on a hot day, and a good friend to sit with while the kids played. That is a perfectly good Tuesday, even if it is not the one we write home about yet.
Next week, a new library. Same ritual.
